Of course, there are enough problems in the Middle East and North Africa, including poverty, war, terrorism, the collapse of political and economic institutions. Education, despite the relatively high costs, still cannot provide training for the workforce of the 21st century. There are more specific problems in the regions. For example, the emirate of Dubai (UAE) has a very cumbersome regulatory system, it is very difficult to navigate in it, and more often it is unpredictable and inconsistent.
But something encouraging is also happening. Young people gather everywhere in Dubai, checking their gadgets from time to time. They walk along the sandy shore by the sea, enjoying the beauty of the newly built canal or sit in a stylish cafe. Two generations ago, Dubai was a small shopping center surrounded by desert, but today this city on the Persian Gulf has turned into a center where technological startups are born. Like Amazon, global tech players such as Google, Facebook, and LinkedIn have significantly expanded their presence in the region.
According to the UN Development Program, in almost all countries of the region today, more than half of the population is under 30 years old. The GSMA Global Mobile Communications Association predicts that nearly two-thirds of them will have acquired smart devices by the end of this decade, and today this figure has already been reached in some countries in the Middle East, but remains low in Egypt and several other countries.
