1. Follow your passion and don't forget about it. Your business probably originates from what you truly love. But after a while, running a business day in and day out, it becomes more and more difficult to maintain the flame of this passion. Feed your passion by reminding yourself every day why and why you started your business. Make sure you are in love with the problem, not the solution. If your first solution doesn't work, surrender again to your passion to solve the problem and find a different solution for your client.
2. Money rules. Business management is both an art and a science. Art is your passion. Science is your business model. Make sure you understand your own business model. I do not urge you to renounce one in favor of the other. Understanding the principles of cash flow is critical to business success. Ignorance is not bliss. If you know how your business is performing every minute of the time, you can celebrate your success or plan how to make even more money.
3. Employ wisely. Forming a new team is exciting, but also scary. Take the time to find the right people for the right job. Fire them immediately if they are not up to the task. As a leader of a small business, you can do whatever you want, but you cannot do absolutely everything! Hire people who love to do what you hate to do so you can devote yourself to your dream and preach your passion.
